Twitter can be a bear pit. As a repository for anything that crosses one’s mind, it tends to attract rebuttals, rejections, replies and refutations like an old sweet attracts pocket fluff. However, with a bit of luck, a judicious following policy and a sensible ‘only when sober’ rule, Twitter interactions should be no more alarming than mild joshing, light sarcasm and clumsy flirting. But cross the ill-defined line and watch your life fall apart.

Social media is currently the marketing Holy Grail. Formerly sceptical clients are now convinced that, properly leveraged, facebook and twitter will open up a treasure trove of commerce.
Against this backdrop, Dutch airline KLM is offering its passengers the chance to select the person they sit next to on a flight, based on their social media profile. Leaving aside the horror every good Englishman feels when faced with the prospect of making small talk with strangers, isn’t this all a bit unnecessary? Can we not be relied upon to simply ‘play nicely’ with our fellow travellers, without vetting them over the net? Don’t people just sleep and read on a flight anyway?

Twitter is a platform frequented by young liberals and techy celebrities, or their PR companies, but New Years Eve welcomed a very interesting new recruit, no less then Britains most-hated OAP Rupert Murdoch.
Murdoch has previously referred to the internet as being “a place for porn, thievery, and hackers”, but has obviously had a change of heart along with some practice in social networking since then.
His registration has caused quite a stir, at the time of writing this blog Rupert had 94,216 followers and counting, and yet he has only chosen to follow seven people himself, most of which are fellow publishing giants as well as Sir Alan Sugar who recently tweeted: “I wonder if my old pal @rupertmurdoch is eying up Twitter to buy or invest in it. He missed out on Facebook, and My Space.. not a great deal.”
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescot noticed the arrival of Murdoch on the site and wittily tweeted: “Welcome to Twitter…@rupertmurdoch. I’ve left you a Happy New Year message on my voicemail!”
There have been more than a few gasps of horror since Rupert started tweeting, most of them coming from people who are keen to protect him, Rupert recently tweeted: “I’m getting killed for fooling around here and friends frightened what I may really say.”
Despite the surrounding worries about giving the 80-year old free reign on such a public platform, there are suspicions that Rupert’s PR brigade are trying to turn around the rather negative public image he has made for himself of late, and friendly rambling across Twitter may be a good starting point.
So far, his tweets have ranged from everyday comments on life in NYC to his opinions on American politics and Obamas latest decisions. He also stupidly wrote “Maybe Brits have too many holidays for [a] broke country” after this week’s Bank Holiday but deleted the post shortly afterwards, not before hundreds of users re-tweeted it, and adding the hashtag #murdochdeletedtweets.
Murdoch thoughtlessly joined Twitter whilst sunning himself on the Caribbean island of Saint Barthelemy, tweeting “Vacations great time for thinking. St Barth’s too many people. Thoughts best kept private around here. Like London!”
If Murdoch is trying to keep up the appearance of a blithering old man who has lost too many of his marbles to take full responsibility for the hacking scandal then this rambling on Twitter is surely a brilliantly direct way of convincing the public of this.
There is a new unverified account under the name of Wendi Deng, Murdoch’s wife who has been attempting to curb Murdochs antisocial twitter behaviour, she says “Trying to explain to @rupertmurdoch that twitter is about following not just being followed. sharing and chatting and tweeting.”
In the meantime, I encourage you all to add Murdoch to your feeds and sit back and watch as he digs himself hole after hole, it’s going to take a lot more than a few thoughtful tweets to tidy up that man’s public image.

As a new year beckons, I am very happy to take on the burden of predicting exactly what will be happening in the twelve months to come. Should none of these occur, please speak to my lawyer.

1. Social sausage
Anthony Weiner (oh the irony!) denied everything and blamed hackers (they always do), when a photo of his genitals was tweeted from his account and sent to a woman in Seattle. The problem was that Weiner, at the time, was one of the nation’s most powerful congressmen and the favourite to become Mayor of New York in 2013. The global media wouldn’t let it drop – probably because there were so many gags to be cracked about his name.
Eventually he caved and admitted the weiner in the photo was Weiner’s weiner. It cost him his 12 year position in the House of Representatives and, of course, the mayoral election race.

Last week Ricky Gervais was forced to apologise for using a particular word to describe people he considered stupid. This week Jimmy Carr withdrew a tweet and apologised for its insensitivity and poor timing.
The Gervais word was certainly juvenile and Carr’s message badly thought through, but were they offensive? And if they were, does that matter?

Anyone who thinks Twitter is just the social network that isn’t Facebook simply hasn’t been paying attention.
Right now, there at least two items of headline news focused on the service. Breaking stories are appearing on the site before they reach the 24 hour, rolling news channels, let alone the newspapers. One fortunate fellow just sold Tweetdeck, a facility that lets you use Twitter on a desktop, for £25m – the buyer was Twitter. Increasingly television shows are displaying their hashtag – a term largely invented by Twitter – in their opening titles (‘Have I Got News For You’ for example), meaning they are promoting a third party website, free of charge, simply because of that site’s influence, power and popularity.
Twitter is clearly something considerably more significant than just another social hub. And for copywriters, it’s more significant still.

Planet media tends to throw up buzzwords like a heavy drinker with acute salmonella. ‘Social networking’, ‘disruption marketing’, ‘viral video’ – and now here comes another: ‘hyper local’. You’re likely to hear this phrase an awful lot, because if predictions are anything to go by, it describes the brave new frontier for broadcasting, the web and even print.
Rather like a balloon, the world’s various media outlets have inflated and expanded over the last twenty years or so. Sky ushered in global satellite TV in the 90s, the internet engulfed our lives in the early 21st century and social websites linked us all to likeminded folk across the world in recent years. As the balloon stretched, regional television became more amorphous and considerably less relevant, ITV soaked up the provincial broadcasting companies (Granada, Central, HTV etc.) and, just this year, Global Media Group has swallowed the independent local radio network whole, rebranding every station Capital (Capital? That’s only London surely?) and duplicating its output across the nation.

You know I’m always moaning about the trite, conservative, safe homogeny that is the creative advertising business in 2011? No? You would if you spent more than an hour in my presence. Well, as with most sweeping criticism, there are exceptions and the current campaign for Diesel would arguably be one.
If you haven’t seen or noticed it, it’s the strapline that’s causing all the fuss. It reads: ‘Be Stupid’. Another execution bears the legend ‘Home Of The Brave, Land Of The Stupid’. What’s more, this is no attempt to ridicule the uncool. The work is very definitely calling the target audience S.T.U.P.I.D.

No, no, seriously – I really mean it. Stop reading NOW. It’s for your own good. This blog post will not change your life, it will not help get you a job if you don’t already have one, and it will not increase your productivity if you do. And, unlike some blog posts you may have read here on Creativepool, it does not contain an interesting interview, nor does it offer job-seeking advice – or, indeed, offer any opinions of any significant value. In short, it is five minutes of your life you will never get back. It will, however, make you more attractive to the opposite sex…
