All in the name

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

In the past, we bloggers at Creativepool have given our opinions, advice and guidance…whether you asked for it or not! Hey, that’s blogging for you. The internet is a free-for-all where anyone can purport to be an “expert”, but luckily, at Creativepool, we have standards and experience. Just don’t believe everything you read on LinkedIn discussion forums; some of the nonsense I’ve read on there, honestly…

Anyway, today the tables have turned. I want YOUR opinion. Or advice or feedback or criticism. You see, I’m choosing a company and domain name. Oh, and I may want a designer’s help with a logo, too.

State of Grace. Beware – careless tweets cost careers.

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Twitter can be a bear pit. As a repository for anything that crosses one’s mind, it tends to attract rebuttals, rejections, replies and refutations like an old sweet attracts pocket fluff. However, with a bit of luck, a judicious following policy and a sensible ‘only when sober’ rule, Twitter interactions should be no more alarming than mild joshing, light sarcasm and clumsy flirting. But cross the ill-defined line and watch your life fall apart.

Snap decision – why Facebook bought Instagram

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Last Sunday Facebook surprised the world. Without waiting for their market flotation later this week – and like a big shot investment banker casually ordering the 1900 Cristal Brut – the social network laid down $1b in cash and stock to acquire Instagram.

Dishing the dirt – what is Cillit Bang doing on facebook?

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Social media – that’s where it’s at. Who needs those expensive telly spots, press spreads and billboards, when hip digital networks offer untold benefits for your brilliant campaign at a fraction of the cost? In the past, I have written that customer engagement via these sites may well be the only game in town. I’m happy to admit I was probably being a touch bold.  In truth, very few brands are actually taking the plunge and completely eschewing traditional platforms for the brave new world. But, Cillit Bang is the exception, promoting and selling the new ‘All In 1 Dish And Surface’ cleaner on facebook alone.

Strife is tweet – a top ten of Twitter scandals

1. Social sausage
Anthony Weiner (oh the irony!) denied everything and blamed hackers (they always do), when a photo of his genitals was tweeted from his account and sent to a woman in Seattle. The problem was that Weiner, at the time, was one of the nation’s most powerful congressmen and the favourite to become Mayor of New York in 2013. The global media wouldn’t let it drop – probably because there were so many gags to be cracked about his name.

Eventually he caved and admitted the weiner in the photo was Weiner’s weiner. It cost him his 12 year position in the House of Representatives and, of course, the mayoral election race.

Hacked.

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Some things are self-evidently wicked and wrong. Plundering the voice mails of an abducted and murdered teenager and deleting the messages, thereby encouraging their family to believe they are alive, would be one.

And this alleged activity has set the UK media in flux. News of the World, for many years the boorish drunk of the print media, now appears to be up to its red top in illegal, corrupt and venal practices involving the phones of stars and the families of the dead. This may well change everything. The tabloid press will struggle to return to their blasé, anything goes, make-it-up-as-we-go world of self-regulation. The game is up and now they must suffer whatever penance is deemed appropriate.  For once Murdoch and his ilk are on the back foot.

Copywriting: not quite what it says on the tin?

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Earlier on this year, you may have read Magnus Shaw’s excellent blog posts So you want to be a copywriter? and the sequel, So you still want to be a copywriter? If you haven’t read them and you want some straight-talking advice about the pitfalls, pros, cons, difficulties, requirements and endurance of will needed to be a copywriter, go read them. But now I’m going to add something else into the mix too. My recent experience of talking to recruiters has demonstrated that, unless you want to focus completely on being a copywriter in a creative agency or you are happy to take your chances freelancing for whoever comes along, then you need several other strings to your bow.

Whatever you do, do NOT read this

Monday, April 18th, 2011

No, no, seriously – I really mean it. Stop reading NOW. It’s for your own good. This blog post will not change your life, it will not help get you a job if you don’t already have one, and it will not increase your productivity if you do. And, unlike some blog posts you may have read here on Creativepool, it does not contain an interesting interview, nor does it offer job-seeking advice – or, indeed, offer any opinions of any significant value. In short, it is five minutes of your life you will never get back. It will, however, make you more attractive to the opposite sex…

Rock the casbah. Advertising and Egypt.

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Watching a movie (K19: The Widowmaker, if you must know) and suddenly the tense claustrophobia of  a stricken Russian sub is broken by the inevitable ad beak. It’s the usual mix of hip young things arranging hip young liasons on hip young mobile phones; successful smart professionals in successful smart suits, swilling branded coffees in board meetings and Range Rovers ready to drive you to most places in the known universe.

Ordinarily this would be less surprising than a suspicious death in Midsomer.  Only I’m viewing all this in the Middle East.  Egypt to be precise.

Feathering the nest

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Would you like to own Twitter? I’m not selling it or anything, so don’t reach for your cheque book just yet. But if you were richer than golden syrup, I’m guessing you might be tempted. Only, here’s a note of caution – Twitter has yet to make a penny in profit.
