I once worked with an Art Director who had just arrived in the UK from a stint at Leo Burnett in Venezuela. As well as alarming tales of armed guards outside his office, he told me this: when pitching, it was usual practice for agencies involved to be paid their expenses and for the winning agency to pay the others a gratuity. A parachute payment, in the modern parlance.
In London, he had a rude awakening. It was the nineties recession and I explained to him that the prevailing climate meant competition was so fierce, and agencies were so hungry to pitch, they wouldn’t dream of asking for any payment from the potential client, let alone expect a consolation fee from the winner. But I conceded the Caracas model was appealing and made everyone’s efforts more worthwhile. I even fancifully hoped such a routine could be established once the economy recovered.

HM Government and Tesco must have thought they’d found the Holy Grail. In an era of high unemployment and a conspicuous absence of career opportunities, the idea that the jobless could somehow be coerced into working for the ubiquitous supermarket for nothing (excepting benefits) must have caused so much hand rubbing, it’s a wonder there wasn’t a large fire.
Of course, once the giant grocer (and plenty others) realised the shocking damage slave labour would inflict on their brand, they retreated quicker than a worm from a hungry blackbird. But I can’t help thinking the whole escapade was symptomatic of a much larger trend. The closer I look, the more I notice the concept of paying for stuff being treated with contempt.

The Great Depression aside, there has rarely been a worse time to apply for a job. And yet for anyone leaving college or school, or simply attempting to recover from the cruelty of redundancy, it has never been more essential. So with high hopes and trepidation, thousands of people are entering the CV bear pit every day – but the level of competition means success can be highly elusive and rejection a harsh and repetitive experience. Such is the joyous reality of a compromised economy.
However, the most common complaint from job seekers tends not to be the rejections but the complete lack of any response whatsoever. Personally, I consider this to be the height of rudeness, demonstrating contempt for talented people and reflecting extremely badly on the company. That said, the ill-considered, conceited rejection letter can be just as bad.

As things currently stand, wealthy business men are far more likely to face a mob brandishing flaming torches than the accolade ‘national treasure’. Even Alan Sugar is, at best, a rather grouchy figure of fun. But if there’s one glaring exception, it’s Richard Branson. With his silly mullet and toothy goatee, he’s the capitalist it’s still okay to like.
So how did Ricky B set himself apart from the evil, bonus-guzzling fat cats? What makes him so different?
Perhaps it’s his hippy roots, or his bottle blond roots. Or maybe it’s his ‘jeans in the boardroom’, call-me-Richard, relaxed approach. Yep, our Richard sure is the ‘People’s Tycoon’. Which is quite surprising because his enterprises tend to be … well … a bit rubbish.

In the age of social engagement, double opt-in emails and viral campaigns, some vintage marketing strategies are still as popular as ever, despite their venerable age.
Take ‘the offer’. When our hunter-gatherer ancestors first started trading goats for wheat, it was probably no more than 24 hours before someone muscled in on the action, offering Buy-One-Goat-Get-One-Goat-Free (BOGGOGF).
The psychology of ‘the offer’ is of course, terribly basic: ‘choose our brand and we’ll reward you for it’. We’ll give you something, let you have two for the price of one, throw in a free gift or give you a deduction on your next purchase. Natural human lust for ‘something for nothing’ will do the rest.

“As things stand now, digital music has failed.”
So says Forrester Research analyst Mark Mulligan. Of course he doesn’t mean digital music isn’t being consumed – just glance around any train carriage – what he’s pointing to is an abiding anxiety that the MP3 revolution is almost over and the record companies still aren’t across it. Not that you’d find many industry executives echoing this sentiment. Most will tell you that, as long as they can continue to bear down on piracy and intervene to make it almost impossible to download music illegally, their fortunes will rally.

I’ve never really seen the point in air fresheners myself. They’re a classic case of tackling the symptom not the problem. If your house smells fishy, farty or otherwise funny, you should really be looking for the culprit (dog, bin, partner) rather than masking the evil smelling odour with a floral fog.
However, it appears I’m in the minority. The UK market for pleasant smelling sprays is a staggering £300m. By any measure, we are all but addicted to the heavenly waft of lavender and aerosol propellant – so perhaps we shouldn’t be at all surprised by the brutality of the competition to market cans of sweet ozone to us.

Even a grizzled old blogger like me can call it wrong. And last week I did. My previous piece stated with confidence that the phone hacking (it’s not really hacking is it?) scandal would not spell the end of the News Of The World. Within 24 hours, the title was finished. The paper was very profitable, sold 2.6 million copies and generated about £35-40m in advertising spend every year.
But misjudgement on such a monumental scale couldn’t be carried and it died of shame.

I’m all for innovation, me. Water powered cars – brilliant! Series record on the PVR – fantastic! Those internets – loving ‘em! But, when it comes to new developments, I do insist on one thing: it must make life easier rather than harder. It has to be simple.

Who’s your favourite band? Older readers may well pick some old guitar slingers who are no longer together. Younger coves will perhaps be saying ‘Band? Don’t you mean DJ, granddad?’ But either way, my next question is the same: how do you imagine they get paid? You’d be forgiven for thinking they make recordings, people buy them and the artists receive the money. If only.
The record label / management / star, three-way division of fortunes raked from CD sales is not only an archaic model, it’s a dead one. An enormous amount of music is now consumed through free or nearly free outlets, legal (Spotify, Grooveshark) or otherwise (torrents, ripped files). This gives the listener access to far more material but leaves the artists very light on revenue.
Alternatives must be found.

The Devil’s deal. Are agencies really paying to pitch?
