I’m all for innovation, me. Water powered cars – brilliant! Series record on the PVR – fantastic! Those internets – loving ‘em! But, when it comes to new developments, I do insist on one thing: it must make life easier rather than harder. It has to be simple.

Last year I wrote an article for CreativePool called ‘So You Want To Be A Copywriter?’.
You can read it here >
The intention was to provide a very basic guide for anyone considering a career in … well … copywriting. I thought it might attract a modest response, but the feedback was astonishing. In fact, the piece still generates enquiries – I had an email from someone who had read only two days ago.
But perhaps the most impressive outcome was the success one reader has had in pursuing her writing ambitions. I am absolutely certain it has been her determination and talent that have carried her forward, but if the article gave her a bit more confidence or helped things along in any way, I couldn’t be more delighted.

If you think opera is simply a load of fat women bellowing out a shrill volcano of unintelligible gibberish in a warbly voice, think again. No, fat men are often involved too… Just joking. Of course, we all know that stereotype and it’s about as misguided as looking at Picasso’s cubist work and saying that he couldn’t draw properly. There is incredible variety in opera and, even though the style of singing might not be to everyone’s taste, it doesn’t mean that it is irrevocably constrained to the limitations of period dress, sets and props. The only limitation is in the mind of the director. But a maid serving a couple of takeaway lattes to the female leads might not be quite what you’d expect from the Royal Opera House. On Friday night, though, that’s what happened.

All the corporate giants are trying to cash in on our waistline insecurities. If it’s not Slimfast, Wii Fit and Adios then it’s Weightwatchers and Dr. Robert Atkins. Bright sparks who claim to have the magical solution to return our bodies to the glory of our former youth seem bombard our lives with their bullshit on a daily basis. If it’s not via the means of advertising then it’s all over the telly box as well, be it Gok Wan, Supersize Vs Superskinny or whatever, society has turned individuals with weight issues into circus freaks for us all to peer at and feel sorry for. For God’s sake bore off and leave these poor people alone.

Last time I blogged about the iPhone, I was singing its praises while simultaneously warning that it could lead to serious relationship problems if it found its way into the bedroom. Don’t get my wife started on Angry Birds, for instance. “Just one more level before I switch off, darling.” (it’s just occurred to me how appropriate the name is…)

Boys with toys. A bit of a generalisation, as rhyming adages go, but one which I think is more true today than ever before. No matter how old I get (and allegedly my life hasn’t even started yet, given that, I’m under 40) I, like a huge number of men, just love my gadgets. And I do think we’re “worse” than women when it comes to obsessing over new technology. Yes, yes, we can all probably think of an exception to the rule (and I bet she can down pints quicker than you too) but broadly speaking, it’s going to be the guys who are hunched over their PS3 on a wet Sunday afternoon. Or a sunny one, come to that. Even Samantha Cameron recently said on a TV interview that she gets annoyed with “Dave” for fiddling with his BlackBerry for too long because it can get (wait for it) “quite annoying”. (more…)
