Ticking the right [equal opportunities] box

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Getting your ideal job (or any job, come to that) can be a real uphill struggle in the current economic climate. But is it any harder if you have a disability? Equal opportunities statements might well be printed in black and white at the bottom of application forms, but realistically, do they actually count for anything? When rejecting a perfectly well-qualified applicant, it’s very easy to trot out the phrase ‘there was someone with more directly relevant experience than you’. Nobody will be any the wiser as to whether that is the real reason or not; it’s impossible to prove. So in our evermore touchy-feely society, is having a disability in the current job market any less of a stigma now than it once was?

Professional development courses: a load of old tosh?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

If, like me, you are registered with a number of job sites, you will probably get a weekly or even daily glut of emails telling you that you really ought to think about taking some sort of training course. Be it a course in Dreamweaver, Flash or anything else design or web-related, there is apparently a course for everyone in the job market out there. The trouble is, working out which courses are any good can be quite a challenge in itself.

Meet Thor Santisiri

Friday, July 16th, 2010

At the age of 20, I was thrown together with this quietly spoken guy from Thailand to form a creative team. I soon realised this wasn’t going to be easy. He spoke little English. He couldn’t draw. He came from a totally different culture. He didn’t get the humour. He didn’t even like football.

Over countless bowls of wonton soup, we worked out a way of communicating with each other and slowly but surely the ideas began to spark. On one heady occasion we even managed to get some work into D&AD. In fact the guy from Thailand turned out to be a real creative genius. So today I’d like to introduce you to Thor Santisiri, former Chairman and Executive Creative Director of TBWA/Thailand. And my old art director.
