Most professionals provide an easily identifiable service. The lawyer offers his advice and representation, the dentist his drill and pink water. But the stock in trade of the professional creative is a little harder to pin down. Is the designer proffering Mac skills, visual awareness or a way with colours? Is the copywriter serving up a way with words, a cleverness with headlines or the ability to spell? Probably. But it’s the ideas clients really want from us.

Getting paid to be creative is for the most part, brilliant. You get to run down the deepest rabbit holes of your imagination, retrieve the most far fetched and wildest ideas and then present them to the wider world. There are other perks such as not having to wear a suit, rarely having to start work before 10am and not being frowned upon when a force five hangover is taking hold (hedonism goes hand in hand with creativity). In this game your biggest enemy is not your boss or your co-workers, it’s yourself, or to be more specific, that unpredictable little critter who pays you visits from time to time known as inspiration.

The intention was to provide a very basic guide for anyone considering a career in … well … copywriting. I thought it might attract a modest response, but the feedback was astonishing. In fact, the piece still generates enquiries – I had an email from someone who had read only two days ago.
But perhaps the most impressive outcome was the success one reader has had in pursuing her writing ambitions. I am absolutely certain it has been her determination and talent that have carried her forward, but if the article gave her a bit more confidence or helped things along in any way, I couldn’t be more delighted.
