You Are Man (in need of article)?

They’re at it again, those craaaaazy French Connection people, with their slightly annoying advertising campaigns. The Spring/Summer 2011 collection has recently been unveiled, with the slogans ‘You are Man?’ and ‘You are Woman?’ Now, first things first – try saying those phrases without sounding like a caveman. Manage it? Then I bet you sounded like Manuel from Fawlty Towers instead. WTF, FCUK?

What is the last taboo in advertising?

Pedro Simko, General Manager of Saatchi & Saatchi in Switzerland says:

 “I compare the advertising message to a conversation between friends. Everything that is said between friends can, in my opinion, be said in advertising.”

It’s a nice sentiment, but perhaps a little too idealistic. In these risk-averse times corporate marketing rarely troubles accepted creative boundaries.

This Is The Man – but what is the point?

I’m blogging this week from sunny Malta. I’m not showing off (well, maybe just a bit – I did brush shoulders with La Toya Jackson in the marina this afternoon, as it happens) but I’m mentioning that I’m in Malta because I was interested and slightly annoyed to see French Connection’s 2010 “This Is The Man” campaign emblazoned across various bus stops and billboards.
