Jack’s off. The anatomy of a banned campaign.

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Jack Wills - banned advertising campaign Most days, the British populace is exposed to a smorgasbord of advertisements they would happily ban. Annoying, patronising, stupid or all three – there’s no shortage of work deserving the chop. But here’s a campaign that actually has been removed from the public arena by the usually soft and frequently toothless Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

It’s a campaign by the slightly low-profile clothing brand, Jack Wills. The label makes and sells togs in a style the Americans would call ‘preppy’. That is to say, it is influenced by the traditional garb of U.S. college students and is rather smart and utterly inoffensive. But their recent advertising has attracted complaints and ultimately an out-and-out ban for the use of under clad models depicting a ‘hedonistic university lifestyle’ – deemed unsuitable for youngsters.

The UK’s top design and creative blog sites

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

The explosion of design resources and blog sites over the past years has made it hard for all of us to keep up. Here is a small collection of UK only design related blogs that I like to keep an eye on. Sites where you can view work for inspiration, sites where you can find resources that you use or just blog sites of designers who you like to follow.

Fulfilment failure – the best way to waste a budget.

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

What’s the best way to waste an advertising budget? Perhaps hiring Wayne Rooney would do the trick. Maybe booking loads of space in the breaks in ‘72 Degrees North’ would squander that cash pretty effectively. How about a 48 sheet poster campaign at the South Pole? These options would certainly see your client’s expenditure go the way of mortal flesh, but there’s a better way and it’s happening all the time. I’ll call it ‘fulfilment failure’.

The ’80s – love ‘em or loathe ‘em?

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Just when you thought Jason Donovan was safely confined to the stage version of Priscilla Queen of the Desert… Just when you thought Tears For Fears had cried themselves to death… Just when you thought fashion had finally escaped that whole cut-your-own-hair/charity-shop vogue phase… We’re back in the ’80s with a vengeance. Only this morning, the aforementioned ’80s poster boy Jason Donovan popped up on BBC Breakfast to plug his first album release in years – but far from trying something original, the album is unimaginatively entitled “Soundtrack of the ’80s” and looks like a slightly desperate attempt to cling to yesteryear and his hey-day.

Crimes Against Footwear…am I wrong?

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

A very sticky hello from Belgrade. 32 degrees today and set to rise to 36 by the end of the week. Yikes – my pasty English skin had better watch out. It’s too hot to do that much during the day apart from sit in street cafes where a fine mist of water is periodically sprayed out over the customers who sit semi-comatose, drinking their ever-warming bottles of Jelen Piva and espressos. One of the other ways to avoid the sweltering heat is to wander around the shops in the main street, Knez Mihailova, which have the aircon permanently set to “arctic”. And it is in one of said shops that I found my inspiration for this week’s blog: ghastly shoes.

Tongue-in-chic? Fashion reaches break point at Wimbledon

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Ah, 21st June. My favourite day of the year so far. Not only is it the longest day and the first day of summer, but it’s also the first day of my beloved Wimbledon. With the possible exception of England vs Slovenia on 23rd June, I fully intend to be glued to my TV at every possible opportunity to watch my sporting hero, Roger Federer, try to claim his seventh Wimbledon title – and to see what type of bespoke tennis suit he’s going to wear when he strolls out on to Centre Court.

Now the weather is marginally hotting up and people are packing up their cases for their jolly holidays, the Gods of fashion have piped up, as they always do, about what we pale and chubby Brits should be wearing on the planets beaches this season and the answer is this dear friends – Speedos.

There is a lot of ugly footwear on the high street these days, from high-heeled wellies to trainers with a camel toe feature; the recent developments in the realms of Average Joe shoe design have been well and truly shocking.
