There are many signs that something is going wrong. The scarcity of invitations to join the staff of a particular agency; the lack of requests to pencil out dates in your diary and the distant memory of those top-dollar, overnight emergency briefs.
Only fool wouldn’t come to the conclusion that the industry’s finances are sinking faster than Simon Le Bon’s yacht. Still, any seasoned freelance copywriter has seen all this before. Recession follows boom as surely as a belch follows a can of cola and things will surely come right. And they will.

Social media is currently the marketing Holy Grail. Formerly sceptical clients are now convinced that, properly leveraged, facebook and twitter will open up a treasure trove of commerce.
Against this backdrop, Dutch airline KLM is offering its passengers the chance to select the person they sit next to on a flight, based on their social media profile. Leaving aside the horror every good Englishman feels when faced with the prospect of making small talk with strangers, isn’t this all a bit unnecessary? Can we not be relied upon to simply ‘play nicely’ with our fellow travellers, without vetting them over the net? Don’t people just sleep and read on a flight anyway?

We’ve been spoilt. The delights of the modern media have ruined us. Our predecessors would have little or no idea what a polar bear was, let alone be presented with the vision of one giving birth to unbelievably sweet baby polar bears. But now, we merely have to activate the shimmering screen in our lounge rooms, settle back with a mug of Horlicks and the majesty of the Arctic giant reproducing is displayed in HD colour. But do we gasp in awe? Do we shed a silent tear at the sheer beauty of the wondrous event? Do we heck. Instead, we rush to the Radio Times website and type away like a secretary on speed, denouncing the whole charade because we suspect the scene was filmed at Bristol Zoo and not the Tundra.

As a new year beckons, I am very happy to take on the burden of predicting exactly what will be happening in the twelve months to come. Should none of these occur, please speak to my lawyer.

Merry Christmas? Times are as hard as a granite boulder, encased in steel, painted in superglue and treated with a rare carbon compound.
Broke is what we are.
Blame a multitude of politicians and stab an accusing finger in the direction of international bankers and I will be with you, brothers and sisters. Had the former been watching the latter, we may not be in this sorry situation. Add to this negligence a patchwork government hell-bent on hobbling the voluntary and public sectors and we’re staring down the wrong end of a long, bleak winter. But again, what’s to be done? In the creative industries, can we really lighten this crushing load in any meaningful way? I feel certain we can.

1. Social sausage
Anthony Weiner (oh the irony!) denied everything and blamed hackers (they always do), when a photo of his genitals was tweeted from his account and sent to a woman in Seattle. The problem was that Weiner, at the time, was one of the nation’s most powerful congressmen and the favourite to become Mayor of New York in 2013. The global media wouldn’t let it drop – probably because there were so many gags to be cracked about his name.
Eventually he caved and admitted the weiner in the photo was Weiner’s weiner. It cost him his 12 year position in the House of Representatives and, of course, the mayoral election race.

Being born Colin Fulcher in Middlesex, halfway through the Second World War, was a rather inauspicious start for one of the most progressive and impressive graphic designers of the 20th century. Perhaps that’s why he changed his name to Barney Bubbles.
Trained as a retail display designer in the art school of Twickenham College of Technology, Colin began his professional career at Michael Tucker Associates, which he described as ‘very Swiss; very hard; unjustified; very grey’. It wasn’t an insult because he also asserted that it was here he learned ‘everything about typography’. But he had to wait until 1965 for his big leap forward – a position as senior graphic designer at The Conran Group. It’s amusing to note that Colin – who became so associated with the counter culture and new wave – actually created items for the utterly middle class Habitat store and a logo for Strongbow cider, while in this role.

How much do you imagine a quarter page, black and white advertisement in the London edition of Metro (the free commuter newspaper) costs? A few hundred quid? A bit more? The answer is £6,636.
Perhaps I’m terribly naive or getting a bit old, but I find this remarkable. Six and a half grand buys you access to 744, 386 readers to whom you can display a 200mm high x 112mm box in mono, sharing the page with editorial and other advertisements over which you have no control. Want colour? That’ll be 25% more.

A great philosopher once said (or perhaps it was Kylie, now I think about it), “Better the devil you know, than the devil you don’t”. Whoever, to my mind, it was the winning principle behind the classic, advertising agency creative team.
Take one copywriter, find an art director of a similar standard and level of experience, and introduce them to each other. Ensure they stand a reasonable chance of exchanging the odd civil word, bung them a couple of briefs and if the resulting work is on target – or at least, shows some promise – bingo! You have yourself a creative team.

“There’s an old Wayne Gretzky quote that I love. ‘I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.’ And we’ve always tried to do that at Apple. Since the very beginning. And we always will.”
This morning, a bouquet and an apple with a bite missing were placed outside the Apple store on Regent Street. It was the first of many tributes to Steve Jobs, who has died aged 56.
Alongside Steve Wozniak, Ronald Wayne and Mike Markkula, Jobs founded Apple Inc. in 1976. Long before pads, pods and phones, Apple had a mission to develop the first practical and affordable home computer. It was in 1984 that an emotional Jobs announced the birth of the Macintosh – the first commercially successful small computer with a graphic interface.
