Steve Jobs 1955 – 2011

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

“There’s an old Wayne Gretzky quote that I love. ‘I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.’ And we’ve always tried to do that at Apple. Since the very beginning. And we always will.”

This morning, a bouquet and an apple with a bite missing were placed outside the Apple store on Regent Street. It was the first of many tributes to Steve Jobs, who has died aged 56.

Alongside Steve Wozniak, Ronald Wayne and Mike Markkula, Jobs founded Apple Inc. in 1976. Long before pads, pods and phones, Apple had a mission to develop the first practical and affordable home computer.  It was in 1984 that an emotional Jobs announced the birth of the Macintosh – the first commercially successful small computer with a graphic interface.

Vinnie Chieco. The freelance copywriter who named the iPod.

Friday, September 30th, 2011

The year is 2001. Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter from San Francisco is sitting in the offices of Apple Inc. He and a small group of other freelance writers are here to name a rather interesting new product Apple is launching.

Before the writers are shown the new product they receive some background information. The device plays music, but not in the traditional way. The Apple team claim that listening to music will never be the same again. One guy explains, “We’ve invented a whole new category of digital music player that lets you put your entire music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go.”

Torrential reign. Why the music industry is still on a wild goose chase.

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

“As things stand now, digital music has failed.”

So says Forrester Research analyst Mark Mulligan. Of course he doesn’t mean digital music isn’t being consumed – just glance around any train carriage – what he’s pointing to is an abiding anxiety that the MP3 revolution is almost over and the record companies still aren’t across it. Not that you’d find many industry executives echoing this sentiment. Most will tell you that, as long as they can continue to bear down on piracy and intervene to make it almost impossible to download music illegally, their fortunes will rally.

iPad 2 is here.

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

It’s a year since Apple first brought out the iPad and convinced us to part with a sizable chunk of our hard-earned dosh in order to own the then most ‘revolutionary’ piece of technology that Apple had ever made. This Friday sees the launch of iPad 2, a machine which according to Apple, blows its predecessor out of the water. That’s it then everyone, take your iPads down to the pawn brokers and dig deep in those pockets, it’s time to go and worship at the Apple altar again.

Fruits of their labours – what is Apple doing in China?

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Gazing with pride at your Mac iPad and feeling a bit trendy and cocky, you may have come across the message ‘Designed in California, built in China.’ Understandably, you’ve probably then moved on to a quick game of Angry Birds and thought no more about it. But behind that tag lies a tangled tale.

Failure to launch: why some brands don’t make it.

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Perhaps it’s the money. Large budgets are often greeted by marketing teams in the same way Keith Richards welcomes a stiff drink. But the fact remains that endless resources are not always guaranteed to produce branding success. Far from it.

The history of global commerce is littered with stories of massive investment, followed by abject disaster. And we might imagine that for every failure the marketeers become smarter and the number of products on the scrapheap becomes smaller. That would seem logical, but when it comes to launching brands, logic is not always high on the agenda.

Engineering shame: the cruel end of a true genius.

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

It’s a safe assumption that many CreativePool visitors are Mac users. Good for you. I’m a PC user, but let’s not fight about it. Instead, the next time you’re lauding Messers Jobs and Wozniak as the saviours of civilization, you may want to spare a thought for Alan Turing. In fact, you may want to get down on the knees of your artfully torn jeans and thank him with all your might. I’ll join you, then we can add our most humble apologies …

Calling all technophiles: the iPhone 4 is here

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Last time I blogged about the iPhone, I was singing its praises while simultaneously warning that it could lead to serious relationship problems if it found its way into the bedroom. Don’t get my wife started on Angry Birds, for instance. “Just one more level before I switch off, darling.” (it’s just occurred to me how appropriate the name is…)
