Dress to impress

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Wes BorlandWith the recent release of Limp Bizkit’s new album, ‘Gold Cobra’, we have seen the return of their guitarist’s bizarre stage persona complete with body paint, masks, wigs and all forms of customised props.

It seems the world of rock music has always acted as a nurturing ground for oddball six-stringers to adorn themselves with the most bizarre and outrageous clothes, costumes and makeup. Who has set the benchmark for visual expression in the world of rock guitar and who paved the way for these head-turners to take centre stage?

The 67 Spurs shirt.

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Back in 1967, I was a rather simple 8-year old who liked to spend every available second kicking a ball against a wall in our yard. Like a lot of 8-year old boys, I dreamed of scoring fabulous goals, winning trophies and being carried around the Wembley pitch shoulder high. And it was during this time that I saw something I still think is one of the most amazing pieces of design ever created.

The toughest job in fashion… it could be yours!

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Back in February, publishing giant Condé Nast announced that they were going to launch an educational institution right here in London. It will go under the name of the Condé Nast International School of Fashion and Design and is hoping to rival the likes of Central Saint Martins and the London College of Fashion. Condé Nast are currently advertising for a director to launch and run the entire school and the managing director Nicholas Coleridge has been interviewing candidates from inside and outside the educational establishment. Second to designing Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, this has to be the most challenging job in fashion, read on to find out if you should be applying.

What to wear when addressing a client.

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Yesterday we had a few sniggers in the studio. The reason being our favourite Flash designer Pabs had to attend a client meeting. Now Pabs is from Cuba so he doesn’t have a firm grasp of the correct dress code for client meetings. In truth he doesn’t really get clothes much at all. In default mode his typical wardrobe would be a smiley face t-shirt, low rider jeans and trainer laces running around the floor like roots from a tree.  So yesterday morning, to our surprise, he walks in with a striped white shirt, eye-wateringly tight slacks and on the waist a ‘statement’ belt covered in gunmetal pyramid studs. He wasn’t at all happy about wearing this particular attire. Pabs is his own man and as he grimly walked past my desk, under his breath he muttered something about “selling out to The Man.”

Super Elevated Gillie by Vivienne Westwood. The most dangerous item of footwear ever created.

Friday, May 13th, 2011

The Grand Dame of British fashion is chatting with supermodel Naomi Campbell. The conversation turns to the tumble Naomi once had on the catwalk in Paris. The reason for the fall, a worldwide event staged in front of the world’s press, was not actually her fault. The blockbuster rocking horse shoes named ‘Super Elevated Gillie’s were to blame. She simply couldn’t walk in them.

Hats off to you for wearing that hat

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

As readers of my previous blog posts will know, I’m no fashionista. Gok Wan and I are pretty much negative images of each other in almost every way, and you will never hear me say ‘you go, girlfriend!’ while clicking a Z-shape in the air. At least, not unless I’m doing an impression of Gok Wan. So when I write what is essentially a fashion column, like my Crimes Against Footwear one in Belgrade last summer, it is based purely on ‘me likey, me no likey’. So here goes. My top ten ‘what were you thinkings’ from last Friday’s Royal Wedding.

Dirty Realism. When Kate met Corrine.

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Welcome to JFK. The year is 1988 and the airport is alive with people on the move. Amongst the crowd the Moss family wait patiently for a connecting flight to London. As the information board confirms their flight is on time, a stranger taps 14-year old Kate on the shoulder.

Innovative fabrics – how fashion got smart.

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

This week has seen the launch of Stone Island’s heat reactive jacket. Essentially, it’s a tracksuit top which changes colour from black to green at 27 degrees. The brands creative director Carlo Rivetti insists that Stone Island has always been 90% science focused when creating new collections. The technology behind the jacket lies in the crystal heat-sensitive coated fibres which react to their environment.
Whereas the usefulness of such a garment might come into question (green armpit patches?), the innovation behind such a product can’t be sniffed at.

Jack’s off. The anatomy of a banned campaign.

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Jack Wills - banned advertising campaign Most days, the British populace is exposed to a smorgasbord of advertisements they would happily ban. Annoying, patronising, stupid or all three – there’s no shortage of work deserving the chop. But here’s a campaign that actually has been removed from the public arena by the usually soft and frequently toothless Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

It’s a campaign by the slightly low-profile clothing brand, Jack Wills. The label makes and sells togs in a style the Americans would call ‘preppy’. That is to say, it is influenced by the traditional garb of U.S. college students and is rather smart and utterly inoffensive. But their recent advertising has attracted complaints and ultimately an out-and-out ban for the use of under clad models depicting a ‘hedonistic university lifestyle’ – deemed unsuitable for youngsters.
