The connection between punk’s pop cultural movement and the political ideology of ‘anarchy’ stems from the 1976 debut single from Sex Pistols: ‘Anarchy In The UK’. The Pistols weren’t actually a political or anarchist band, more of an art statement, and their reference to ‘anarchy’ was a statement of provocation and disgust rather than a manifesto. They did, after all, sign to three major record labels and fought tooth and nail for the money they earned.

No, that’s not the message on the card accompanying a Christmas present from me to my wife. I have more sense than to choose an item of clothing for her – or at least if I do, I keep the receipt somewhere VERY safe. Nope, the title of this week’s blog is based on the fact that, at the end of 2011, one of the world’s dictators went all festive and released his own fashion label in time for Christmas.

As things currently stand, wealthy business men are far more likely to face a mob brandishing flaming torches than the accolade ‘national treasure’. Even Alan Sugar is, at best, a rather grouchy figure of fun. But if there’s one glaring exception, it’s Richard Branson. With his silly mullet and toothy goatee, he’s the capitalist it’s still okay to like.
So how did Ricky B set himself apart from the evil, bonus-guzzling fat cats? What makes him so different?
Perhaps it’s his hippy roots, or his bottle blond roots. Or maybe it’s his ‘jeans in the boardroom’, call-me-Richard, relaxed approach. Yep, our Richard sure is the ‘People’s Tycoon’. Which is quite surprising because his enterprises tend to be … well … a bit rubbish.

You can hardly move in an inch in a shop these days without being confronted with fair trade this and that and an ending array of ethical options for your every consumer need. Once an option for dreadlocked hippies and mother earth types, ethical living has become a necessary way of life in modern times when draining the planets resources and exploiting impoverished people is just not an acceptable way to carry on any more. That said, there is still a hell of a lot of exploitation and reckless greed going on at the end of the chains of production, particularly in the fashion industry. It still seems that the vast majority of people want their fashion fast and cheap and they don’t pause to think much about where or how their £5 shirt has come to land in their wardrobe.

Hello dear blog readers. Apologies for posting this so late in the day but I have been out at the V&A Museum all afternoon trying to get my head around just what exactly Postmodernism is. Stupid though this may sound I managed to complete my art degree and 27 years of my life without having any grasp of the concept whatsoever. Thankfully the V&A Museum have now answered that with their new exhibition – Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970 – 1990 which is running from now until the 15th January.

Last Saturday night I lost my catwalk show virginity to the most eligible designer out there, our very own national yellow-haired treasure, Vivienne Westwood. We hot-footed it down to the most unlikely of venues, Smithfields meat market, to cast our eyes upon the Red Label Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

As many of you will know Topman has recently got itself in a bit of trouble with some new T-shirt designs featuring some rather questionable slogans. But given that the emotional responses these novelty slogan T-shirts usually conjure up range from boredom and disdain to offense and resentment, the topman T-shirt debacle isn’t really a fall from grace for the world of ‘edgy’ slogan shirts. Rather, it is just another example to add to the collection of why provocative slogan shirt design is one of the less needed contributors to the area of T-shirt design as a whole. Join me here in my list of the most overrated, unfunny and all-round unwelcome designs.

It really gets up my nose when some Charlie Big Potatoes from the creative industry blogs, tweets or posts about some exotic location they’re visiting. They disguise the mention of Antigua or Paris with a dubious link to some project or other, but they actually just want you to know they’re living it up abroad. And you’re not.

With the recent release of Limp Bizkit’s new album, ‘Gold Cobra’, we have seen the return of their guitarist’s bizarre stage persona complete with body paint, masks, wigs and all forms of customised props.
It seems the world of rock music has always acted as a nurturing ground for oddball six-stringers to adorn themselves with the most bizarre and outrageous clothes, costumes and makeup. Who has set the benchmark for visual expression in the world of rock guitar and who paved the way for these head-turners to take centre stage?
